About the Speaker:

Joe Atkinson is a Lecturer in Law at the School of Law, and member of the Sheffield Institute of Corporate and Commercial Law (SICCL).

Prior to joining the University of Sheffield, he taught at Queen Mary University of London, University College London, and Oxford University, and was a visiting researcher at New York University.

Joe researches and teaches on labour law and labour market regulation. His current research interests include the philosophical foundations of labour law, and the relevance of human rights for the regulation of work and the workplace.

His work on the protection of privacy at work, the use of implied contractual terms to protect workers’ human rights, and Deliveroo riders’ access to collective bargaining has been published in the Industrial Law Journal and the Modern Law Review.

Before entering academia, Joe worked in Westminster as a Senior Parliamentary Researcher and Political Advisor, during which time he was responsible for advising on a range of legislation relating to economic, immigration and security matters. He has also conducted legal and policy research in a freelance capacity for charities and MPs.
